‘Russ’ Murphey

Baker City

Russell Warren “Russ” Murphey, 74, of Baker City, died July 22, 2013, at his home after a long battle with lymphoma. His family was at his side.

His funeral was at 3 p.m. Monday, June 29, at the Baker Christian Church, 675 Highway 7. Pastor Jesse Whitford officiated. The committal service was at Rock Creek Cemetery. There was a celebration of life dinner afterward at the church.

Russ was born in California and was educated there. He worked for more than 25 years for the California Fish and Game and retired in 1990 after 22 years as a game warden.

After his retirement he moved to Show Low, Ariz., where his wife, Marge, pursued a counseling career. They moved to Baker City in 2006 from Arizona.

Russ loved the Lord and was an active member of the Baker Christian Church. He led several Bible studies and also led many hymn sings for the community. His beautiful bass voice will be missed.

Russ tried many part-time positions but principally loved to hunt and fish. He was a very friendly, wonderful man who will be sorely missed by family and friends. The fish of Baker County will now be safer.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Marge; their three daughters, Cyndi Huff (Dave) of Petersburg, Ky., Shelly Scott (Ray) of Baker City, and Jan Sorenson (Tony) of Cody, Wyo.; five granddaughters and three great-granddaughters; his sister, Jean Nagle (Hank) of Wilseyville, Calif., and his half-sister, Shirley Cook of Woodland, Calif.

He requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to his wife’s nonprofit Christian counseling business, Angel Rose Counseling through Gray’s West and Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814. He prayed daily for her ministry and was a great encouragement.
