Obituaries for June 8, 2009

Paul E. Nebelung, 82, of Haines, died May 31, 2009, at his home.

Paul was born on March 11, 1927, at Buchanan, Mich. He came West during the Great Depression on Route 66. Paul lived in Oregon most of his life and called Oregon his home.

He worked as a logger in the Willamette Valley before hiring out to the railroad. He retired as a locomotive engineer from Southern Pacific Railroad.

Paul served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He liked hunting, fishing, and camping. He loved the backcountry and had covered most of the state from corner to corner photographing and videotaping the views as he traveled. He was loved and respected by all his friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte; and son, Douglas.

Survivors include his daughter, Lori Powell, and her husband, Steven Ulrich, of Haines; sisters, Mary Leavitt of Eugene and Dorothy Cooper of Kirkland, Wash.; grandson, Aaron; granddaughters, Angela, Nicole and Callee; great-grandsons, Ryland and Conner; and many nieces and nephews.
