Obituaries for March 24, 2014

Nancy Fee

Colville, Wash., 1933-2014

Nancy Catherine Bates Fee, 80, of Colville, Wash., died March 20, 2014, at her family home after a long illness.

Her memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Baker United Methodist Church, 1919 Second St.

Nancy was born on Dec. 18, 1933, at Baker City to John and Hazel Gilbert Bates. She was one of five children.

She lived in Baker County most of her life before moving with her daughter, Catherine, to Spokane, Wash., in 2009, and then finally on to their family ranch at Colville, Wash.

Nancy was married to F. Howard Leasy in 1950 for more than 25 years, and they had four daughters.  She subsequently married Charles Zimmerman in 1982 and Harvey Fee in 1990.

Nancy was a stay-at-home mom while the girls were growing up. She spent her time teaching them to sew at an early age and volunteering as the homeroom mother for school parties and as their Girl Scout leader.

In the early 1960s, she helped teach classes on using commodity foods to improve family diets. Nancy was an avid quilter and loved making porcelain dolls, including sewing their clothing.

She and Howard co-owned Leasy Upholstery for several years. She sold the business after he died and went to work at other local businesses such as Big V, The Merc and Kings prior to her own retirement.

She really enjoyed fishing and camping with family members. She was proud that she obtained her GED as an adult student later in her life.

Survivors include her daughters, Catherine (Larry) Griffith, Yvonne (Ed) Hurst, Brenda (Bruce) Cable and Cheryl (Roger) Winemiller;  18 grandchildren, 40 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; her sister, Susan (Lee) Derrick; sisters-in-law, Joan Bates, Leilah Bishop, and Eleanor “Rae” Colton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Hazel Bates; brothers, Henry and Glenn Bates; a sister, Carol Young; three husbands, F. Howard Leasy, Charles Zimmerman and Harvey Fee; and many of her beloved friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shepherds for Lost Sheep, a nonprofit that trains service dogs for wounded warriors, through Tami’s Pine Valley Funeral Home and Cremation Services, P.O. Box 543 Halfway, OR 97834.
