Jessie Schrader Duim

Jessie Marie Schrader Duim, 94, died May 10, 2009, at the home of her son, David, in Baker City.

At Jessie’s request there will be no service. The Neptune Society was in charge of the cremation.

Jessie was born the fourth of six children to Magness Olsen and Beret Marie Stene on March 10, 1915, in Los Angeles.

She married Wilbur “Bill” Schrader on March 12, 1934, in Santa Barbara, Calif. and they moved to Oregon where they raised two sons, Wilbur M. and David. Jessie was active in the Douglas County, Oregon, Trail Dusters Saddle Club, where she met many lifelong friends. She and Bill were responsible for helping to instill in all their grandchildren a love of animals, gardening, fishing and camping.

Her grandchildren remember her for making “the best apple pie ever.” They loved spending the nights at grandma’s, where she would let them pick her flowers to take bouquets to their teachers.

Upon retiring, Jessie and Bill moved to Baker City. Jessie was an active volunteer in the community and received the “volunteer of the year” award from St. Elizabeth nursing home.

After Bill’s death in 1978, Jessie moved back to Ojai, Calif., to be near her family. There she met and married Henry Duim in 1990.

Henry and Jessie spent many years gardening and enjoying life until his death in 2005 after a short illness. Jessie moved back to Baker City where she had lived with her son, David, and his wife, Ann. She enjoyed going to Community Connection each day, visiting all her friends.

She was dearly loved by family and the many people who knew her. She will be remembered by all as one who never spoke badly of anyone.

Survivors include her son, David, and his wife, Ann, of Baker City; a sister, Hazel Lanquist of Ojai; a brother, Raymond Stene of Sandpoint, Idaho; grandchildren, Kathryn Talada and her husband, Scott, of Morgantown, W.Va., Debra Hutton of Pendleton, Larry Schrader and his wife, Lisa, and Karen Debs and her husband, Dale, all of Roseburg and Cheryl Carpenter and her husband, Ron, of Baker City; great-grandchildren, Jason Carnes and his wife, Michelle, and their daughter, Grace, of Paducah, Ky., Stephanie Hutton of McMinnville, Brandi Debs and Nicholas Debs of Roseburg, Brian Hutton, Michelle Hansen and her husband, Cody, their son, Ryan, all of Pendleton; Jesse Carpenter and son, Garrett, of Baker City, Holly Mayes and her husband, Travis, of Carlin, Nev., and JHanna Edwards and her husband, Tyson, and their son, Trenton, of Portland.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Magness and Beret Stene; her husband, Bill Schrader; husband, Henry Duim; her sisters, Arvella and Ida; and her son, Wilbur M.

The family wishes to thank Heart and Home Hospice for their wonderful, caring help.
