Cheryl Connor

Cheryl Ann Smurthwaite Connor, 61, of Baker City, died Sept. 8, 2011, at her home.

Her graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Pastor Scott Knox of Blue Mountain Baptist Church will officiate. Friends are invited to join the family for a reception at the home of Russell and Christina Witham after the service.

Cheryl Ann Smurthwaite was born on May 25, 1950, at Baker City to Robert and Ida Patricia Locken Smurthwaite. She graduated from Baker High School in 1968 and nursing school in 1983 as a licensed practical nurse.

Cheryl worked as a nurse for many years at St. Elizabeth Hospital as well as Cedar Manor Nursing Home. She owned a vintage clothing store called Blue Moon, where she also sold her arts and crafts.

Cheryl was a passionate advocate for the National Association of Mental Illness and would always take the time to listen or help her fellow human beings. She raised two beautiful children and loved camping, painting, crafts, decorating and sewing.

Cheryl possessed a gentle heart of gold and showed compassion and kindness toward all around her, her family members said.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Smurthwaite; her mother, Ida Patricia Locken Witham; and her brother, Gordon Smurthwaite.

Survivors include her son, Zac Smurthwaite of Baker City; a daughter, Sarah Connor of Beaverton; brothers, Harvey Witham and Russell Witham; sisters, Molly Witham and Bobbi Smurthwaite Fuller; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family of Cheryl Connor through Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.
