Oliver McCord

Oliver H.P. “Ollie” McCord, 73, a former Baker City resident, died Sept. 13, 2011, at Spokane, Wash.

There will be a special memorial celebration at Baker City next Memorial Day.

Oliver was born on April 16, 1938, at Baker City to Robert and Neva McCord. He was a 1956 Baker High School graduate.

Oliver was an outstanding athlete at BHS. He was a three-year letterman in football, basketball and baseball. He was voted to the all-state team in basketball his junior and senior years.

He attended Boise Junior College for two years and then transferred to Lewis & Clark College at Portland for two years on a basketball scholarship, graduating in 1961.

He went to work for Aetna Life & Casualty Insurance Co. as a claims adjuster for two years at Spokane and then transferred to Great Falls, Mont., as a claims supervisor where he worked for 14 years.

There he met Anna Kay. They were married on July 1, 1971. The next move was to Cheney, Wash., in 1976 where he and Kay worked together as insurance agents for 30 years. After retirement in 2006, they moved to Spokane.

While at Cheney, Ollie was involved in the Chamber of Commerce where he was twice president. He also participated in the Cheney Float Association and in the Junior Miss programs. For more than 30 years he continued to enjoy playing in local basketball and softball leagues and attending Spokane Chiefs hockey games.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Anna Kay (Peterson); his children, Robert McCord and Cheryl Nelson (Roy); adopted children, Christy Kondo and David McCord; stepchildren, Gregory Larson (Barbara Sterkel), Scott Larsen (Cheryl) and Bryan Larsen; his sisters, Shirley Clemens of Salem, and Sharon Hindman and her husband, Joe, of Pullman, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Neva McCord; son-in-law, Loren Kondo; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Kenneth Sturgill and Dorothy and Mel Durgan; brother-in-law, Robert Clemens; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Selmer and Vera Peterson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cheney  Community Church, 1307 Third St., Cheney, WA 99004.
