Baker City, 1923—2005

Orman W. “O.W.” Bieber, 90, of Baker City, died Oct. 10, 2011.

His wife, Olive Bieber, 82, of Baker City, died Sept. 7, 2005.

Their ashes will be buried at Mount Hope Cemetery at 1 p.m. June 14. The Baker Elks Lodge, No. 338, will conduct the service. There will be a reception afterward at the home of Eloise Colton at 2444 Grove St.

Lenore Klugh

Velda Lenore Klugh, 84, a former Baker County resident, died May 22, 2012, at Atascadero, Calif.

She was born in 1928 at Tarzana, Calif. Lenore enjoyed life in the country with her husband, Dean, while living in Oklahoma, Kansas, Arizona, California and Oregon. She enjoyed being a part of the rural community participating in many activities including hosting a Bible study in her home and caring for ill neighbors.

Marion Muncey “Dude” Douglas, 97, died April 6, 2012, at his home in Pine Valley. 

He was born on April 28, 1915, in Pine Valley to Edwin and Vina Douglas. 

Known as Dude to his friends, he attended Clear Creek Elementary School in the upper end of Pine Valley.

Donald Purcell

Donald Frank Purcell, 73, of Baker City, died May 16, 2012, surrounded by his family.

A celebration of Don’s life and memorial service will be Friday, June 1 at 11 a.m. at Baker City Christian Church on Highway 7 in Baker City. Friends are invited to join the family for the service, and for a reception immediately following the service at the church.

Interment will be held at a later date in Beloit, Wisc.

Donald was born on July 26, 1939, in Beloit to John and Helen (Sommer) Purcell. He was raised in Beloit and graduated from Beloit Memorial High School.  After graduation he moved to Janesville, Wisc., to learn the bakery business from his uncle, Kenny Hansen. He learned well and enjoyed being a baker for well over 50 years of his life. While in Janesville he met his first wife, Patricia Bruggee, and they married on June 17, 1961. Don and Pat had three children: Tammy, Timmy and Shelly.  The couple later divorced, but remained friends.

Don worked initially at The Rolling Pin in Janesville, then for many years at Market Square Pastry in Lake Forest, Ill.

In 1973 Don married Matina Gherondas. Matina had two children, Teddy and Gus, who Don raised as his own. Don and Matina divorced, but also remained friends and prayer partners by phone.

Don was an avid sailor on Lake Michigan. He loved reading and was a book collector. He enjoyed having knowledge at his fingertips. Don enjoyed gardening and camping. He loved the evening campfire with his family. He was a ham radio operator since high school, proficient using the Morse code. In later years he took many videos and family pictures.

Don struggled with health issues for many years. Five years ago he moved to Baker City to be near his daughter, Shelly, and her family.

Don is survived by his children: Tammy and her husband, Norm Boots, of Hoffman Estates, Ill., Tim Purcell of Milwaukee, Wisc., Shelly and her husband, Brent Wilson, of Baker City, Teddy Phillips of Zion, Ill., and Gus Phillips and his wife, Jennifer, of Zion; grandchildren: Hannah Wilson, Chad Drake, Sarah Bernardy, Tyler Purcell, Lexi Phillips, Sebastian Phillips, Kyle Phillips and Johnathon Phillips; five great-grandchildren; his sister, Sharyn and her husband, Tom Christensen, of Meridian, Idaho; several nieces and nephews and his beloved canine companions, Danny and Tara.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Purcell; his sister, Deanna Purcell; and daughter-in-law, Michelle Phillips.

Vicki Huff

Vicki Huff, 61, of Halfway, died May 14, 2012, at her home. 

There will be a celebration of Vicki’s life and a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway. 

Vicki Lynn Ingram was born on May 23,1950, at Neosho, Mo., to Ellis Julius Ingram and Mary Jo Stout.  She moved to Halfway with her family where her father worked on the Hells Canyon Dam Complex.  She has two sisters, Lauren “Kaye” Kloch, and Linda Bradburry and one brother, Robert Stout.

She met Thomas Francis Huff at Halfway and they were married on June 3, 1967, at Lewiston Idaho.

From 1967 to 1974, Vicki and Tom lived at Baker City.  Their three children, Thomas Lewis, Donald Leslie and Melinda Kaye, were born here.

In 1974, Vicki and Tom packed up the family and moved to Longview, Wash. While in Washington, she worked as a homemaker and for The Longview Daily News and the Cowlitz County Women’s Support Shelter.  She attended Lower Columbia Community College.

When Tom retired in 1990, they returned home to Halfway where they owned and operated several small businesses as well as the family ranch.

She loved and had a different and special relationship with each of her grandchildren: Joseph Huff, Katelynn Paar, Mariah Huff, Karissa Paar, Jacob Huff, Josh Peer and Jade Peer.

Vicki loved gardening, the more flowers the better, as well as cooking — she was a wonderful cook,  family members said.  She always was willing to try a new recipe and was amazing at making them into her own unique creations.

She also loved to travel all over the U.S. and spent time in France.  Her favorite place was always wherever the sea met the shore. 

She was preceded in death by both her parents; stepfather, Ray Love; a son, Donald Leslie Huff; nephew, Bobby Bradburry; and great-granddaughter, Grace Peer.

Survivors include her husband, Tom; children, Tom Huff and his wife, Melody, of Halfway, and Melinda Paar and her husband, Brian, of Minnesota; seven grandchildren; several  nieces and nephews; and longtime dearest friend, Ellen Lord.

Memorial contributions may be made to  the Pine Haven Beautification Fund through Tami’s Pine Valley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 543, Halfway, OR 97834.

Obituaries for May 16, 2012

Marian Tarter

Marian J. Tarter, 79, of Central Point, died May 13, 2012. 

Her graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway.

Marian was born on May 24, 1932, at Halfway to William D. and Edna Heath. She attended grade school and high school at Halfway.

Marian married Galen Tarter on May 24, 1949. They had three children and traveled the world during Galen’s 26 years in the U.S. Navy.

During her travels Marian attended beauty school, was a telephone operator and retired after 26 years at Farm Services in Medford. Her grandchildren absolutely adored her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Barbara; and her brother, William Heath Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Galen; and children, Galen Dennis Tarter of Shady Cove, James Alvin Tarter and his wife, La Deane, of Rocklin, Calif., and Gale Tarter of Coos Bay; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital through Tami’s Pine Valley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 543, Halfway, OR 97834.

Marnie McConnell, 84, of Bates, died  May 8, 2012, at her home.

Her graveside service was today at the Prairie City Cemetery. Pastor Levi Manitsas officiated.
