Bates park study available for public comments

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is accepting comments
through April 30 on an environmental assessment included as part of a
Land and Water Conservation Fund grant application for Bates State Park
in Grant County.
OPRD is applying for the grant to help pay for the first phase of developing the 131-acre park site. The state bought the property in 2008. It includes the site of Bates, a company sawmill town near Austin Junction that dwindled to a ghost town after the mill closed in the mid-1970s. The environmental assessment discusses the potential impacts of developing a day-use park and an 11-site campground. OPRD plans to open Bates State Park as the 2011 “park-a-year” addition to the state park system. The Bates environmental assessment is online at: www.oregon.gov/OPRD/index.shtml.
