Farewell Bend to celebrate State Parks Day with cooking

Farewell Bend State Park will celebrate State Parks Day Saturday with an Oregon birthday card signing and Dutch-oven cooking contest.

“Happy Birthday Oregon!” is the theme for the 12th-annual State Parks Day celebration. Oregon 150 observances also will include living history presentations, special tours, exhibits and lots of cake, according to a press release from the state Parks and Recreation Department.

Visitors to state park campgrounds will pay nothing to rent full hookup (sewer, electricity and water), electrical hookup (electricity and water) and tent sites. Day-use fees also will be waived at the 26 parks that require passes.

Gov. Ted Kulongoski has proclaimed the date both Oregon State Parks Day and Oregon State Trails Day. Oregon has celebrated State Parks Day on the first Saturday of June since 1998.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife also is sponsoring free fishing Saturday and Sunday. Anglers of all ages can try their luck without a license both days.

There will be a fishing derby Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Highway 203 Pond on the east side of the freeway at Exit 298.

A park-by-park list of State Park Day events with times and other details is posted on the OPRD Web site: www.oregonstateparks.org. Campsite reservations may be made online or by calling Reservations Northwest, 1-800-452-5687, before 5 p.m. Thursday.
