HAWTHORNE, Calif. Bakers Senior softball all-stars beat several tough teams to get to the regional tournament in Southern California.

But none was as good as the Glendale, Calif., team that beat Baker 9-0 in a first-round game Sunday.

The loss broke Bakers eight-game winning streak dating to last months state tournament in Portland.

You can definitely tell were playing teams that play year-round, said Baker manager Dale Curtis. They hit the ball very well, they pitched very, very well.

It gets tougher at every level its what we expected.

Baker will try tonight to regain the momentum it built while winning all three of its games at the division tournament last week in Montana.

Baker will play East Redding, Calif., at 6 p.m. in the four-team tournament.

If Baker wins tonight, it will play Tuesday against the loser of the Glendale-Utah game, Curtis said.

Glendale pitcher Sarah Sherman dominated Sundays game.

She allowed only one hit Amanda Moutsanides single and struck out 14 Baker batters in the complete-game shutout.

We just werent swinging the bats, Curtis said. Our first couple innings we were really sluggish.

Glendales batters matched Shermans performance at least in the first two innings.

Glendale scored seven of its runs in those innings.

Curtis said Bakers pitchers threw strikes Moutsanides, who started, walked two, and reliever Julie Lovisone walked none but Glendales batters found the holes too often.

Baker played solid defense, too, committing just three errors.

Glendale made only one.

Curtis said hes confident Baker will play better tonight.

This team has always had the attitude that they can do it, he said. If we play our game the way we can, I really feel we can come out and beat this Redding team tonight.
