Baker received solid pitching but had some shaky hitting and fielding in its season-opening nonleague baseball game against Weiser Tuesday at the Baker Sports Complex.

The Bulldogs dropped the contest 6-2.

“It was a typical first game,” said Baker coach Dan Blankenship.

“I thought our pitchers threw well enough. We just didn’t hit the ball well enough and weren’t solid enough in the field."

Baker actually led 1-0 through three innings.

The Bulldogs scored their first run in the second inning.

Austin Folkman walked and advanced on a single by Micah Mespelt. Then, after Darren Dolby singled, Folkman scored on Dan Stinson’s fielder’s choice.

Weiser tied the game in the top of the fourth.

Baker then took its final lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Stinson walked and later scored on a triple by Mason Cline.

Blankenship said the Bulldogs had their chances.

“We had lots of baserunners,” he said. “We just didn’t have any timely hits. We had our opportunities.”

Blankenship said Baker had 16 baserunners in the game.

Kody Younger was Baker’s starting pitcher, throwing four innings, striking out five and walking one.

Caleb Custer threw the final three innings, striking out four.

Baker (0-1) will host Scappoose in single games Monday and Tuesday at the Sports Complex. Start time is noon each day.
