Defending Class 4A state champion Ontario served notice to Baker Friday that the state title and Greater Oregon League baseball title still comes through Ontario.

The Tigers opened GOL play by sweeping Baker 8-3 and 10-1 at the Baker Sports Complex.

Ontario pitchers kept Baker bats off balance all afternoon.

Ontario is 2-0 in the GOL and Baker is 0-2.

“We’ve got to hit the ball better than we did today,” said Baker coach Dan Blankenship.

“Their pitchers threw well for them. We just have to refocus and become better hitters one through nine in the lineup,” Blankenship said.

In the opener, Ontario scored two runs in each of the first, second and sixth innings, and added single runs in the third and fourth innings.

Baker managed just eight baserunners in the first six innings, and three of those came in the sixth when the Bulldogs loaded the bases.

Baker didn’t dent the scoreboard until the seventh.

Mason Cline and Dillon Blankenship each walked. Both scored on a double by Kody Younger. Younger then scored on a Keaton Bachman single.

Younger was the losing pitcher.

Ontario took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in Game 2 only to have Baker tie the score in the bottom of the inning.

Darren Dolby opened the Baker challenge first with a triple. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Cline.

That was Baker’s last scoring threat.

Cline was the losing pitcher.

Baker hosts Fruitland in a single game Tuesday, then travels to Hermiston for a single contest Wednesday. The Bulldogs return to GOL action Saturday when they host Mac-Hi in a doubleheader.
