BHS softball team splits at Mac-Hi

Baker opened Greater Oregon League softball Friday with a split at Mac-Hi.

Mac-Hi won the opener 3-2, but Baker bounced back to take the second game 7-2.

“We played a little tight in the first game, and tried to force some things,” said Baker coach Al McCauley.

Baker actually led 2-0 after two innings in the opener.

Tori Brown opened the second inning with a solo home run. Laura Wilson then reached base on an error. Jessi Stephens followed with a single and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Mackenzie Srack. Wilson scored Baker’s second run on a ground out by Becca Joseph.

Mac-Hi scored a single run in the third, and two in the fourth.

Brown took the loss despite throwing a four-hitter. She struck out seven and walked three. Brown also was 3-for-3 at the plate.

Trailing 1-0 in the second game, the Bulldogs erupted for six runs in the third inning.

Joseph led off with a walk and went to third on Danielle Freese’s double. Sierra Howerton drove both runners home with a single.

One out later Darryn McCauley plated Howerton with another single. Brown added another hit before Mac-Hi got the second out. Stephens then drove both runners in with another single. Srack completed the scoring by adding another RBI single.

Freese drove home Baker’s other run in the sixth when she doubled home Srack who had singled.

Brown struck out four and walked three to gain the win. McCauley struck out two Pioneers in a perfect seventh inning.

Baker (6-2 overall and 1-1 in the GOL) hosts Weiser, Idaho, in a single game at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Baker Sports Complex. The Bulldogs then host La Grande in a GOL doubleheader Friday at the Complex.
