Badgers ready to challenge Imbler

NORTH POWDER — Powder Valley is looking to improve on it fourth-place district volleyball finish from a year ago.

To that end, Powder coach Lasa Baxter is very happy with having 20 players out for her program this fall.

“We’ll have a well rounded team,” Baxter said. “We should be able to utilize a lot of balance.”

Returning players include senior setter Sami Fritz, senior defensive specialist Jamie Brown, Kaitlyn Martin, Kate Jones and Jessi Stephens.

Kacie Kitzmiller and Becca Day have transferred from Baker to join the squad.

“Both are great kids,” Baxter said. “And I’ve got some freshmen coming in who also are very strong.

“I’m excited about our season,” the Badgers’ coach said.

She noted that the fact the Badgers can field several players in the 5-foot-10-inch range also will be a plus.

Like the other Old Oregon League coaches Baxter sees Imbler, the defending state 1A champion, as the league favorite.

“When you walk into a season where you have the state champion — Imbler — you look for them to be strong,” she said.

“But the Old Oregon League is strong from top to bottom. And, that only makes us stronger. You never want to take anybody for granted.”

Powder Valley opens its season Saturday at the Dufur Jamboree.
