Baker 14U softball wins at Fruitland

FRUITLAND — Baker Fastpitch Softball won the Bobbie Davis Memorial Tournament in Fruitland May 16-17, going 5-0. 

Darryn McCauley was picked up to pitch for the local ASA team because Monica Voboril was out with a broken finger, injured in a tournament in Walla Walla last month.

In pool play, Baker Fastpitch beat the Idaho Sliders 7-4. Taylor Ellis-Walton went 2 for 2. Sierra Howerton hit a triple. 

Baker then beat the Idaho Thunder 11-2. McCauley and Kaycee Suitter each hit triples.  Abi Smith was 3 for 3. Lisa Shankle hit a 2-RBI double.

In double-elimnation bracket play, Baker beat Weiser 15-4. Michelle Birkmaier went 3 for 4 hitting.

Behind 14 strike-outs by McCauley Baker beat Magic Valley Venom 4-1. Suitter hit a home run. 

In the championship game, Baker beat the Nampa Panthers 12-0 in a mercy rule called game after four innings.

In this game, as well as the previous one, the hitting for Baker really came around. Darion Grove was 3 for 3. Howerton 3 for 4. Jamie Butler, McCauley and Walton reached base three times each.

Baker played solid defense all weekend, with some great catches and fielding. 

Rounding out the team are Taylor McAdams, Danielle Freese, Ashley McConniel and Erin Bachman. Kyana Chaves is out with an injury. Baker Fastpitch is coached by Steve Bachman, Aaron Chong and Jim Howerton.

Baker is at Pendleton this weekend.
