Baker 16U ASA club splits with La Grande

LA GRANDE — Baker's 16U ASA girls softball team split a doubleheader with La Grande Thursday at La Grande.

Baker lost the first game 7-6, but bounced back to win the second game 12-2 in five innings.

In the opener Baker trailed 1-0 through thre innings before tying the game at 1-1. Becca Joseph reached base in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on a passed ball.

La Grande then tallied five runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 advantage.

Baker rallied to tie the game again with two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.

In the sixth, Jessie Stephens and Mackenzie Srack each laced two-out singles to cut the deficit to 6-3.

In the seventh, Savannah Daly slapped an RBI single, and Tori Brown a two-run double to knot the game at 6-6.

La Grande then scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Brown took the loss, striking out six and walking two.

In the nightcap, Joseph drove in three runs and Daly two to lead an 11-hit offensive explosion.

Joseph's first-inning RBI single gave Baker a quick 1-0 lead. Daly added a two-run single, and Laura Wilson an RBI when she was hit by a pitch in the second inning to increase Baker's lead to 4-2.

Baker then erupted for eight runs in the fourth inning. Joseph led the way with a two-run double. Brown and Srack each added RBI singles. Sierra Howerton plated a run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Aubree Shepherd drove in another run when she reached base on an error.

Srack was the winning pitcher, striking out four and walking one.

Baker returns to action at home Tuesday at 5 p.m. against John Day and La Grande at the Baker Sports Complex.
