Baker, Weiser battle elements

As the saying goes, “It’s not nice to mess with Mother Nature.”

Baker and Weiser found that out Tuesday as they attempted to play their boys and girls tennis matches at the Ash Grove Complex.

The matches were scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. But Weiser’s bus broke down about eight miles outside of Baker City.

“Mike Sullivan (Baker athletic director) sent one of our buses out to pick them up,” said Baker coach George Keister.

“Then, when they got here it started raining.”

Weiser didn’t arrive until 4 p.m., and because of the rain the matches were delayed even longer.

Keister, assistant coach Jodi Averett, and three volunteers began getting the water off the courts. By the time they finished and the teams warmed up again, matches didn’t get under way until almost 5:15 p.m.

That wasn’t the end of the rain. More wet stuff hit the courts at about 6:30 p.m., but the teams played through that weather. Matches finally finished up at about 8 p.m.

“We got them in, but it was an interesting day. Matches that were supposed to start at 3 p.m. finally got going about 5 p.m.,” Keister said. “And, with Weiser being an hour ahead of us, it was a late night for them going home.”

Baker won the boys match 3-2.

Dan Sizer and Ivan Hansen earned singles wins in straight sets.

JJ Vela and Chance Parry picked up a win in the No. 2 doubles match to give Baker the edge.

The Baker girls won the match 4-1. Individual results were not available this morning.
