Baker Y wrestling tourney

Baker’s YMCA youth wrestling program wound down its season Thursday with its annual season-ending tournament at Baker High School. The young wrestlers had been practicing for about a month, said Baker coach Brandon Young. “They learned at least one move from every position,” he said. “On their feet they learned about a good stance. From there they learned a sprawl and a Hi-C to a double. Down on the mat they learned about their base position and a standup. From the top position they learned a far knee/far ankle breakdown and a half nelson and, of course, their Bulldog JJs. “I have had a few groups that have been new to wrestling and this group of kids was by far the easiest to work with,” Young said. “They all had a lot of parent support. They brought excitement to the mat and looked forward to practices. We also had several dads that helped out which was key, as well as Ted Shaw who also helped out with high school wrestling.” Some of those dads were Rich Eskew, Flint Stearns, Andy Dennis, and David Spaugh. In all 20-25 kids participated in the program. “I think everyone’s favorite match was Cody Eskew weighing in at 40 pounds versus Gus Mack-Skeels at 35 pounds,” Young said. “Tabor Chandler is a natural wrestler. Luke Stearns is a big strong kid. I was amazed by the athleticism from Rylan Kirkwood. Lincoln Turner was one of the dominant wrestlers in the Y. Juan Diaz also showed a lot of drive and is thinking of pursuing the sport further by joining the mat club next fall.” All the kids recieved medals for their efforts.
