Baker baseball falls to Tigers
By GERRY STEELE
Baker’s young baseball team continues to show improvement, but mistakes still prove costly.
The Bulldogs (2-6 in league) lost a Greater Oregon League doubleheader at Ontario Saturday, 4-2 and 8-1.
“When I look back from the first time we played them and then now I see great improvement,” said Baker coach Dan Blankenship.
“We’re getting there. We have four more league games all at home, so maybe we can get back into it by getting them.”
Baker fell behind 4-0 after three innings of Game 1 Saturday. That was partially because the Bulldogs offense sputtered.
“We had the bases loaded in the first, had the bases loaded in the fourth, and had the bases loaded in the fifth,” Blankenship said.
“We had runners on in almost every inning.”
Baker only capitalized in the fifth, scoring both of its runs.
Sam Averett and Dillon Blankenship each walked, and Colten Richards singled to load the bases. Averett and Blankenship then scored on a single by Braden Phillips.
Averett took the loss on the mound despite throwing a complete-game four-hitter. Two of the runs against him were unearned.
“Sam threw a great game,” Blankenship said.
In Game 2, Ontario built a 7-0 lead after three innings.
Again Baker’s bats were silent with only four hits.
Baker scored its run in the fifth when Averett doubled and scored on a single by Blankenship.
Kody Younger took the loss on the mound.
Baker travels to Fruitland Wednesday for a nonleague makeup game. The Bulldogs then return to GOL action Friday by hosting Mac-Hi.
