Baker baseball splits GOL finale

Baker ended its Greater Oregon League regular season baseball campaign by splitting a doubleheader at Ontario Thursday. The Bulldogs lost the first game 9-8 then rebounded to win the second game 18-11.

“We didn’t play well defensively in the first game,” said Baker coach Dan Blankenship.

“I didn’t think we played very focused.”

In the opener, Jordan Harlow and Trace Richardson gave Baker a 2-0 lead in the first with RBI hits.

Grant Marcum added an RBI double and Harlow a bases-loaded walk to boost Baker up 4-3 in the second.Marcum and Richardson added run-scoring singles in the third and fourth to give Baker a 6-3 edge.

Ontario then scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Marcum and Richardson added solo home runs in the fifth and sixth to end Baker’s scoring.

Cole Brown took the loss, pitching the first four innings.

In Game 2, the score was tied at 6-6 after three innings.

Derek Blankenship and Harlow drove in runs in the first inning. Brown led off the third with a solo homer. Dekker Smith added an RBI double, and Will Barr and Coleman Lay RBI singles.

Richardson’s two-run double, and a run-scoring single by Blankenship boosted Baker up 10-7 after four innings.

The Bulldogs then tallied six times in the fifth. Richardson led the way with a grand slam homer. Brown and Blankenship added RBI singles.

Marcum added a solo homer in the sixth.

Marcum drew the start on the mound, gaining his third win of the season.

Baker now has a week off before starting post season play May 26.

“We have a week off to get ready,” Coach Blankenship said. “We’re looking forward to the week off to try to get healthy.”
