Baker opened its high school baseball season Monday and Tuesday by winning two of three games at a tournament at the Baker Sports Complex.

Monday, the Bulldogs defeated Scappoose 7-6 and Weiser 10-5. Tuesday, Baker (2-1) lost 4-0 to Homedale.

Against Scappoose, the Bulldogs rallied from three runs down in the bottom of the seventh inning for the win.

With the bases loaded and two outs Keaton Bachman lined a two-run walkoff double to plate the winning runs.

“The kids played well,” said Baker coach Tim Smith. “They battled back well.

“We had some guys step up and get hits when we needed them.”

Bachman and Austin Plumbtree each finished with two hits and two RBIs. Micah Mespelt added a double and two RBIs.

Kyle Srack earned the win on the mound in relief of Caleb Custer.

Against Weiser, the Bulldogs hammered 15 hits.

“The kids hit the ball really well,” Smith said.

“I think the enthusiasm from the Scappoose win carried over for us. We capitalized with runners in scoring position.”

Trailing 5-3, the Bulldogs scored seven runs in the fifth inning. Chace Dixon led the way with a three-run double. Plumbtree added a two-run double in the inning.

Winning pitcher Taylor Gulick added three hits and an RBI.

Stephen Schott, Custer, Mespelt and Dixon each added two hits.

As potent as Baker’s bats were on Monday, they were just as silent Tuesday.

The Bulldogs managed just five hits and committed four errors in losing to Homedale.

“We were flat,” Smith said.

“We didn’t play with any urgency. Their pitcher got into a groove and we were kind of in a stupor.”

Smith said the Baker errors also hurt.

“Our errors extended a couple of innings, making our pitchers throw more pitches,” he said.

“We can’t do that and win. We have to continue to work on making the routine plays.”

Losing pitcher Mason Cline led Baker with two hits.

Baker hosts Columbia High School of Nampa Tuesday at 4 p.m.
