Baker boys rout Ontario

Baker exploded for 30 fourth-quarter points Friday to pull away from Ontario in an 81-55 Greater Oregon League boys basketball win at BHS.

The Bulldogs opened the quarter with a 15-0 run to break the game open.

Baker coach Craig Woods said he had a little talk with the Bulldogs after the third period.

“We outscored them by 10 in the first quarter, and had a plus four in the second quarter,” Woods said.

“We talked about wanting to build the momentum at halftime. Then We were minus five in the third quarter,” he said.

Ontario outscored the Bulldogs 11-2 in the final minute of the third quarter to pull within 51-42 at the break.

Then, after Ontario added a free throw, Baker got hot.

Trace Richardson bombed home a pair of three-point baskets from beyond the tip of the key. Derek Blankenship added another “three” from the left corner, and a basket after a steal. Jesse Brown added another basket after stealing the ball, and Dekker Smith chipped in a basket inside.

By that time Baker led 66-43 with five minutes left in the game.

Ontario added a pair of free throws before Brown chipped in four more points, and Blankenship two to increase the margin to 72-45.

Ontario didn’t get its first field goal in the final period until 2:08 remained in the game.

On the play Ontario coach Scott Helmick was whistled for his second technical foul and ejected from the game.

Ty Everson scored five points and Brown four in the first quarter to help Baker take a 14-4 lead.

Blankenship then added eight second-quarter points to help the Bulldogs take a 34-20 halftime lead. Smith, Richardson and Brown each added three points in the quarter.

Ontario battled back to outscore the Bulldogs 22-17 in the third period.

Blankenship led four Bulldogs in double figures with 19 points. Brown added 18, Richardson 15 and Smith 11.

“The last couple of games we’ve got some good balanced scoring,” Woods said. “That’s what’s going to make us successful.”

Baker travels to La Grande Friday and Fruitland, Idaho, Saturday.
