Baker cheerleaders provide support

One of the Baker High School sports that receives the least publicity is the BHS cheerleading squad.

The varsity, junior varsity and cheer squad members provide cheering and enthusiasm for the other Bulldog ahletic teams during the fall season.

Amy Powell, in her first year as cheerleading coach, and Mary Collard are the team’s advisors.

Powell said the cheerleaders perform during each quarter of the varsity and junior varsity football games, perform a dance to music by the BHS band, and perform at halftime of the football games.

The cheerleaders perform along the sidelines during all JV and varsity football games, and most volleyall matches. They also provide spirit for the BHS cross country and soccer teams.

“They also make all the run-through signs for the football games, and posters for the school and the Homecoming dance,” Powell said.

“The team practices four days a week, for at least a couple of hours each night.”

This past summer the Bulldogs attended the five-day Eastern Oregon University camp in La Grande.

The camp, run by the NCAA National Cheerleading Association, offered daily work in dance, cheers and stunts.

“It was loud, energetic work,” Powell said.

Baker earned the camp spirit stick twice, and had two members of the squad named most spirited.

Members of the varsity squad are Mackie Carnes, Megan Fitzpatrick, Lexi Grother, Lindsey Helman, Acacia Linde, Chelsea McVay and Tia Novak.

JV members are Amanda Bailey, Cirra Bork, Grace Dudely, Erin Elms, Ashley Hughes, Shataeu Lansdon, Liberty Newell, Jessilyn Sayers, Kayla Spriet and Jordan Warren.

Members of the cheer squad are Liz Carlson, Erin Guyer, Kira Jones, Lexie Price, Diana Taylor, and Michelle Wilhelm.
