The tournament was supposed to be a treat for baseball purists but Baker's pitchers, spoilsports that they are, ruined the whole thing.

Batters had to swing wood bats during the three-day, five-team event this weekend at the Baker Sports Complex.

The crack of a wood bat smacking a baseball is the sweetest of sounds to many fans.

The four teams that played the tournament host Team Rudi Diamondbacks swung quite often.

But those teams' batters produced a lot more whooshes than they did cracks.

Baker pitchers allowed just three runs as the Diamondbacks swept five games to claim the tournament title, and conclude their 25-3 season with 12 straight wins.

"Our pitchers threw outstanding all weekend," Baker Coach Dan Blankenship said. "We had a great time at the tournament."

Baker's 5-1 win over Orofino, Idaho, in Sunday's championship game typified the Diamondbacks' dominance on the mound.

Starting pitcher Derek Blankenship shut out Orofino for six innings, striking out five and giving up two hits.

Orofino scored its lone run against Baker closer Cole Brown, who pitched the final inning.

Grant Marcum had three hits, and Jon Woolard hit a home run to lead Baker.

Baker opened the tournament Friday by beating La Grande 5-0, and routing Orofino 12-2 in five innings.

Dekker Smith threw a three-hit shutout in the La Grande game, striking out six.

Smith helped himself with two hits and an RBI.

Jordan Harlow earned the win against Orofino. Ty Everson had three hits, and Harlow, Trace Richardson and Woolard each hit a double.

In the first of two games Saturday, the Diamondbacks beat Pendleton 1-0.

Ty Everson threw a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits. Baker turned three double plays.

Later Saturday, Baker routed Winnemucca, Nev., 10-0. Brandon Dolby was the winning pitcher.
