Baker struggled its way to a 2-1 victory over Umatilla Saturday afternoon in a Special District 7 girls soccer match at the Baker Sports Complex. “A win is a win,” said Baker coach DeeDee Clarke. “It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win.” Umatilla (0-3) actually scored first, when junior Catherine Rouston beat Baker keeper Laura Wilson from in front of the net. Baker (1-0) evened the score later in the first half when Kyana Chaves arched home a high shot from the right of the goal that caught the corner of the net. The score remained 1-1 at halftime. Baker scored the winning goal late in the second half when Shasta Overton beat the Vikings keeper from short range directly in front of the net. On the play, Marley Robb arched a pass from Overton’s right, and several players battled for the ball in front of the net. Overton emerged from the scramble of players to punch home the goal. “The girls were getting more aggressive as the game went on,” Clarke said. “I liked that these girls got to play Umatilla to open league play. Playing one of the weaker teams helped our confidence.” Clarke said the Bulldogs still have a lot of rough edges to smooth out. She said the fact Baker has played just two matches is a key factor. “The more games we play, the better we’ll get,” Clarke said. Baker returns to the Sports Complex Saturday to host Mac-Hi in a noon contest. |
