Baker girls get first win

CANYON CITY — The Baker girls had had enough of losing. After going without a win during the season’s first month, the Bulldogs broke the streak with a 45-37 win Tuesday over Grant Union. “That was big, going into league play on Friday,” Baker coach Tim Smith said. “We needed to get a feel for what it’s like to win.” The key sequence Tuesday was early in the final period. Baker had squandered most of its 28-22 halftime lead by playing sluggish in the third quarter. The Bulldogs led 34-33 after three quarters, and the Prospectors had all the momentum, Smith said. “But then we got a couple of defensive stops, and a couple of baskets, and we won going away,” he said. Baker outscored Grant Union 11-4 in the final period. Mackenzie Warner led the Bulldogs with 13 points. Whitney Phillips added 9 points, and Emily Smith 8.Baker plays host to Ontario at 6 p.m. Friday.
