Baker girls top Mac-Hi again

Baker's Magic Number for clinching a Class 4A state girls basketball berth is 1.

The Bulldogs celebrated the third annual Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Night and moved a step closer to the post season Friday with a 61-31 victory over Mac-Hi in a Greater Oregon League game at BHS.

The Bulldogs wore pink uniforms, and all proceeds from the evening were donated to the Baker Relay for Life and breast cancer research.

The win means one more Baker win, or one more Mac-Hi loss, and the Bulldogs clinch the GOL's third-place state berth.

Michelle Freese scored nine of her 12 points in the first quarter to lead Baker to a 20-6 cushion at the break.

Emily Smith then added seven points, Michelle Birkmaier five and Abi Smith four as the Bulldogs increased their lead to 39-19 at halftime.

The pattern continued in the third period, where Baker outscored the Pioneers 18-6 to build the margin to 57-25. Freese scored five points, Ashley Trees four and Birkmaier three to lead the way.

One negative for the Bulldogs came at the final buzzer. Baker's Monica Voboril and Mac-Hi's Makia Carlson got tangled up near center court. Both players were ejected as time ran out. That means each player will have to sit out the next game. In Voboril's case, that is Tuesday's non-league contest with Nyssa.
