Baker girls win GOL playoff game

Baker accomplished several positive things Tuesday during its Greater Oregon League girls basketball district game against Mac-Hi.

First, the Bulldogs won the game 53-27. Second, Baker broke a four-game losing streak with the win. Third, the Bulldogs secured a first-round game in the Class 4A state playoffs. And, fourth, Baker now will travel to La Grande for a 6 p.m. game Thursday in the second round of the GOL playoffs.

Tuesday, Baker came out of the gate with a swarming defense, causing Mac-Hi fits.

“Our defense was some of the best defense we’ve played all year,” said Baker coach Tim Smith.

“Our offense was spurred by our defense. We caused a lot of turnovers and we did a great job of taking care of the basketball,” he said.

The Bulldogs also dominated the backboards.

“We shot the ball much better, and rebounded great,” Smith said. “I thought Whitney Phillips just played an outstanding game on the boards.”

Baskets by Phillips and Mackenzie Srack gave Baker a quick 4-0 lead in the first quarter. Then, after Mac-Hi got one basket back, Phillips and Srack sandwiched baskets around a three-pointer by Mackenzie Warner for an 11-2 Baker lead with two minutes left in the period.

Baker led 15-6 at the break.

Baskets by Haley Adams, Warner and Srack helped Baker boost its lead to 21-8 three minutes into the second quarter.

Then, after Mac-Hi pulled to within 23-15 with 3:09 left in the half, Baker went on a 10-0 run to lead 33-15 at halftime. Warner had six of those points, Srack two and Aly Ogan two.

Baker then outscored the Pioneers 20-12 in the second half to win going away.

Warner led Baker with 20 points. Phillips added 11 and Srack eight.
