Baker golf preview

New Baker High School golf coach Mike Long is taking nothing for granted with this year’s team.

Long, who volunteered with the Baker Junior program for five years, replaces Scott Warner as the Bulldogs’ coach.

“I just love to be out on the golf course and love to coach,” Long said.

Long said he welcomed 20 golfers to early practices, most of whom are new to the program.

The Baker boys, third in the Greater Oregon League last season, return the most proven players.

Dru Simonski-Davis and Pat Vaughan both advanced to the state playoffs last season.

Zach Thatcher, Jarrod Maxwell, Kevin Frasier, Dillon Delong and Joe Black also return.

The Baker girls advanced to state a year ago after placing second in the Special District 5 race.

The lone returning player from the state team is senior Mackenzie Warner.

Emily Smith, Meagan Fitzpatrick and Aly Ogan also return from last year’s program.

“We have a lot of room for improvement,” Long said. “A lot of these kids are just starting to swing their clubs again.”

Long said, particularly the girls team, can shave strokes by working on their putting and chipping.

“Those are the easiest places to shave strokes off your score,” he said.

Long is being assisted by volunteers Dave Davis, Dan Story, Brian Geddes and Brad Bachman.

Baker’s next action is April 2 at Mac-Hi.
