Baker hammers Scappoose

Baker’s offense continued to get better Monday when the Bulldogs banged out a dozen hits in a 12-2 six-inning baseball romp past Scappoose at the Baker Sports Complex.

“The guys did a much better job of getting the two-out hits, and hits with guys in scoring position,” said Baker coach Dan Blankenship.

“And our pitchers threw pretty well today. It was just a pretty solid game all around,” he said.

Five Bulldogs had two or more hits, and two had three or more RBIs.

“You could tell we’d played a couple of games,” Blankenship said. “The kids looked more comfortable at the plate. They also did a good job running the bases aggressively.”

Scappoose started left-hander Chris Neifer against the Bulldogs. Despite his short-arm, side-arm motion, Baker touched him up for nine runs in 3.2 innings.

“I thought the kids did a nice job of adjusting to the lefty,” Blankenship said. “They did a nice job adjusting to his motion.”

Dekker Smith got Baker’s bats started with a triple to lead off the second inning. Smith scored on a groundout by Jordan Harlow.

The Bulldogs then increased their lead to 5-0 in the third. Derek Blankenship drove in two runs with a double. Harlow added an RBI single. Smith scored the fourth run on the front end of a double steal.

Baker added four more runs in the fourth. Ty Everson had an RBI double, Blankenship and Harlow run-scoring singles, and Cole Brown a sacrifice fly.

Then, after Scappoose cut Baker’s lead to 9-2 with single runs in the fifth and sixth, the Bulldogs tallied three times to end the game.

Harlow added his third RBI hit. Trace Richardson drove in a run with a groundout. Jon Woolard ended the game when the Scappoose third baseman threw the ball away for an error allowing Harlow to score.

Harlow threw the first five innings, and Smith the sixth. The duo combined to throw a three-hitter.

Baker (2-1) hosts Weiser, Idaho, in a doubleheader Thursday at 1 p.m.
