Baker kickers lose to Mac-Hi

Mac-Hi swept Baker in a pair of girls and boys soccer matches Thursday at Milton-Freewater.

Mac-Hi nipped the Baker girls 2-1 in a Special District 7 match. The third-ranked Pioneers stopped Baker 10-0 in a Greater Oregon League boys match.

In the girls match, Mac-HI scored a controversial goal about 10 minutes into the match. A Baker player the ball carom off her face causing blood to come from her nose. Baker coach DeeDee Clarke and the players began signaling the officials that there was blood on the field.

However, Clarke said, even though her players began to take a knee — the usual step when play is stopped for an injury — the officials did not whistle play dead and Mac-Hi scored the goal.

“I asked the official why he didn’t stop play but he wouldn’t acknowledge me,” Clarke said.

The Baker coach said Mac-Hi’s second goal slipped through the Baker keeper’s hands.

Danielle Freese scored Baker’s goal off a corner kick from Robbie Langrell.

“It was a beautifal play,” Clarke said. “The girls played a good game. I’m really proud of them.”

Clarke noted that she had just 14 players available for the match. The Bulldogs left 11 players home due to illness.

“We had 11 players out with the flu,” she said. “Including five starters. We haven’t all of our players available for any varsity match this season.”

Mac-Hi rolls over Baker boys

Baker had no answer for the league-leading Mac-Hi boys.

“Some of our boys played pretty well, but others didn’t,” said Baker coach Anthony Washington.

“We had a couple of good opportunities. I saw a lot of improvement. It continues to be a program in the making.”

Washington said he plans to bring four to five junior varsity players up to th evarsity when the teams meet again Monday in Baker.

“Those guys have earned a shot at some varsity time,” the Baker coach said.

The Baker girls travel to Umatilla Saturday. The boys host Mac-Hi Monday at the Baker Sports Complex. The game was originally scheduled for Oct. 24, but was changed at Mac-Hi’s request.
