Baker loses twice but claims Babe Ruth title

LA GRANDE — Baker lost two games to Snake River Valley Friday at the District 3 Babe Ruth baseball tournament at La Grande. Baker lost 9-3 and 11-9, and won the district championship. That’s right. Baker is the district champion. Baker and SRV are the only two communities fielding district teams. And, since SRV has an automatic berth as the host team for the state tournament later this month, Baker advances as the district champion. The state tournament will be played at Ontario July 20-24. Baker coach Brad Phillips said his team had its chances Friday, but was its own worst enemy. “We had too many walks and untimely errors,” he said. Baker pitchers issued 16 walks in the two games, and Baker committed five errors. In the opener, Baker trailed just 2-1 entering the bottom of the third inning. SRV then scored five runs to put the game away. Nate Baeth took the loss. In Game 2, Baker built a 6-0 lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning. But SRV outscored Baker 11-3 the rest of the way. Baeth led Baker’s offense with three hits. Braden Phillips, Kipp Miller and Caleb Custer each added two hits. Miller, the third Baker pitcher, took the loss. Members of the Baker roster are Alex Turner, Ben Baxter, Custer, Phillips, Baeth, Collin Hessel, Colby O’Grady, Tyler Talbot, Miller, Mason Cline and Kody Younger.
