Baker finished third at the Baker Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday at BHS. The tournament format was a dual format. However, most teams didn’t have full lineups, so rosters were combined in may cases. “It was a fun tournament, combining the teams to make full ineups,” said Baker coach Brandon Young. “I was proud of the way everyone fought. We’re just inexperienced. We have a full lineup to work with. We have a lot of time to improve before district,” young said. Teams competing Saturday were Adrian, Parma, Homedale, Huntington, Grant Union, and Baker. “We were able to have four dual teams and ran a few round robin groups as well,” Young said. “It allowed the small schools the opportunity to win a team award.” Dual results were Adrian/Homedale 52, Baker 23; Baker 51, Grant Union/Homedale 24; Parma 48, Baker 30; Parma 40, Adrian/Homedale 36; Parma 54, Grant Union/Homedale 21; and Adrian/Homedale 42, Grant Union/Homedale 35. Parma won the dual tournament. Andrew Porter (135 pounds) and Anthony Constantine (152) went undefeated on the day for the Bulldogs to earn individual medals. Porter had one tough match against a Parma wrestler and was able to hang on for a 5-2 win. “We had some great matchups for our team and it was a good way to put some pressure on the kids and see how we reacted to it,” Young said. “The mental aspect of wrestling is one of the most difficult parts of the sport. Believing that you have a chance to win...If you think you can win, then you are always in the match, but if you don’t believe in yourself you will lose every time.” Young said the Bulldogs will see Parma and Homedale again Jan. 22-23 in a tournament, and then dual them on Jan. 30. “It will be a good measurement when we dual Parma again, to see how much we improve in the next month,” he said.
