Baker out at District 3 tourney

Baker’s stay in the District 3 10-11-year-old baseball tournament at Wade Williams Field lasted just two games.

Baker lost its opener 14-10 to La Grande Saturday, then fell 16-6 to Milton-Freewater Sunday.

La Grande 14, Baker 10

Baker fell behind 12-1 after three innings against La Grande before rallying.

Baker used an 8-run fourth inning to pull within 12-9 but just couldn’t get over the hump.

“We started slow then had a nice fourth inning,” said Baker coach Tim Smith.

“We weren’t getting the ball to fall. We were hitting the ball at people and (La Grande) was hitting it in the holes.”

La Grande finished with 16 hits.

Isiah Simpson pitched the first four inning for Baker.

“Simpson pitched well. We just didn’t give him much support. But the kids made a gallant effort,” Smith said.

Mason Dowdy led Baker with a double and two RBIs. Simpson added a triple and an RBI.

Against Milton-Freewater Baker’s bats and gloves went silent.

Baker managed just four hits and committed five errors.

“We struggled at the plate,” Smith said. “And, defensively, at times, we made some mental errors.

“We just couldn’t produce any runs,” Smith said. “Our pitchers threw strikes, but we just didn’t make the plays.”

Rab Bowers had two hits and two RBIs to lead Baker.

“I told the kids they had nothing to be ashamed of. They can hold their heads high,” Smith said.
