Baker’s “Fabulous Five” wrestlers got off to a strong start Thursday at the Class 4A state wrestling tournament at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Four of the five advanced to today’s quarterfinals, and the other is still active in consolation action.

Andrew Porter, Baker’s 130-pounder, earned a pair of decisions to advance. Porter defeated Robert Stroh of Yamhil-Carlton 14-6 in his first match. Porter then needed overtime to subdue Hidden Valley’s Seth Sotelo 8-6. Porter will wrestle second-seed Taylor Tagle of Sweet Home in the quarterfinals.

Andrew Gettle (145) also won his first two matches. Gettle nipped Tyson Dahl of Douglas 4-3 in his first match. Gettle then defeated J. Porter of Stayton by forfeit. Gettle will wrestle second-seed Jacoby Stanley of Cottage Grove in the quarters.

Ted Shaw (189) pinned Hidden Valley’s Mike Russell in 1:36 to win his first match. Shaw then pinned Sutherlin’s Kyle Summers in 5:49. Shaw will face Thomas Shantz of Sisters in the quarterfinals.

Jake Shukle (215) pinned Chance Crane of South Umpqua in 3:48 in his first outing. Shukle then had to go to overtime to top Grant Thompson of Cottage Grove 4-2. Shukle will meet top-seed Lance Tausaga of Illinois Valley in the quarterfinals.

Anthony Constantine (152) earned a 7-3 decision over Henley’s Harmon Heater in his first match. Constantine then lost 10-3 to Alex Simantel of Scappoose to drop to the consolation bracket. Constantine will face Gladstone’s Devon Renard in his next match.

Action continues today and Saturday at Memorial Coliseum.
