Baker softball splits

Baker’s offense awakened for one game Tuesday, then fell back into a sound slumber.

The Bulldogs banged out 10 hits in a 10-0 win, then managed just four in a 5-2 loss while splitting a non-league softball doubleheader against Grant Union at John Day.

“The girls came out and swung the bats well in the first game,” said Baker coach Al McCauley.

“Then it got cold and windy in the second game and they were just satisfied with their win. We just seemed to lose our focus in the second game,” he said.

In the opener, Baker jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs Tara Talbott drew a walk and stole second. Darryn McCauley then singled her home. Then, after Tori Brown walked, the second run scored when Grant Union misplayed Becca Joseph’s grounder.

Baker added three runs in the third inning. Brown drove in one with a single, and Laura Wilson two with another base hit.

Talbott and Brown each added RBI doubles in a two-run fourth that boosted Baker’s lead to 7-0.

The Bulldogs then ended the game by 10-run rule in the sixth, tallying three times. Talbott drove in two with a home run to center. Joseph scored the other on the front end of a double steal.

Brown earned the win in the circle. She allowed three hits, walked four and struck out six.

In Game 2, Brown and McCauley drove in Baker’s runs.

McCauley took the loss, pitching four innings. She allowed six hits, walked two and struck out one. Mackenzie Srack pitched three innings allowing one hit, walking two and striking out one.

Baker (2-6) hosts Elgin in a single game Saturday at noon at the Baker Sports Complex.
