Baker softball splits with Ontario

Baker’s up-and-down offense continued to play well one game and not so well in another Friday in a Greater Oregon League softball doubleheader at Ontario.

Baker banged out 15 hits in an 11-3 victory in the first game, but managed just five hits in a 1-0 loss in the nightcap.

“We played short ball real well in the first game,” said Baker coach Al McCauley.

“We got our leadoff batters on and got them around with our short game. We were swinging the bats well in the first game.”

McCauley was, however, at a loss as to the turnaround in the second game.

“We faced the same pitcher in the second game and didn’t generate any offense. I don’t know, you tell me,” he said.

Leading 1-0 in the first game, Baker exploded for five runs in the third inning. Two runs scored on a single by Tori Brown. Freshman Darryn McCauley then followed with her first varsity home run, a three-run shot to left.

Tara Talbott accounted for Baker’s other runs with a two-run single in the fourth, and her seventh homer of the season, a two-run blast in the sixth.

Mackenzie Srack was the winning pitcher, throwing a six-hitter. She struck out three Tigers.

Ontario scored the only run of Game 2 in the bottom of the first inning and made it stand up.

Baker had runners reach third base twice in the sixth inning. Savannah Daly was called out at the plate, and Andrea Wilson was stranded on the base.

“The umpires called Daly out, but I thought she got under the tag,” McCauley said.

Baker (2-4 in the GOL) hosts Weiser, Idaho, in a non-league doubleheader Tuesday at the Baker Sports Complex.
