Baker softball stops Taft

Baker looked more like itself Saturday in its Class 4A state softball playin game at the Baker Sports Complex.
The Bulldogs (17-6) had slugged 14 home runs in their last five games. But, the one game they didn’t get a long ball they lost 1-0 to Mac-Hi.
Saturday, against Taft (6-20), Baker reverted to form with four homers and 13 hits, nine for extra bases. The Bulldogs won the game 11-1 in six innings.
Baker started slowly, trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the third inning on a solo homer by Taft catcher Keitra Mason.
Baker then answered with four runs in the bottom of the third.
With one out Sierra Howerton lined a solo homer to left field to tie the game. Jessi Stephens was hit by a pitch and Darryn McCauley followed with a bloop double to right.
Darion Grove then grounded out to short to drive home Stephens for a 2-1 lead. Taylor McAdams followed with another homer to left-centerfield for a 4-1 Baker lead.
“It took us a couple of innings to mae the adjustments to their slower pitching,” said Baker coach Al McCauley.
“And, we had solid pitching and solid defense. DJ struck out eight and allowed just three hits. We’ll take that.”
Tasha Nelson added the first of her two homers with one out in the fourth to increase Baker’s lead to 5-1.
Baker put the game away in the sixth with six more runs.
Danielle Freese opened the inning with a double, and Stephanie Shepherd was hit by a pitch. Nelson then hit a towering homer to left field for three runs.
“Tasha Nelson had a heck of a day both offensively and defensively,” Coach McCauley said.
An out later, Stephens reached base on an error and McCauley reached on a fielder’s choice with another Taft error.
Grove then doubled home Stephens. McCauley later scored on a wild pitch. Grove then scored the final run on a ground out by McAdams.
Nelson finished with four RBIs, and mcAdams three.
Baker now travels to Gladstone for a first-round playoff game Wednesday. Game time has not been set.
Baker played Gladstone during Spring Break, splitting a doubleheader at he Sports Complex.
“We know what they have and they know what we have,” McCauley said.
“Although our lineup has changed quite a bit since the first time we played them.”
