Baker softball struggles at Boise tourney
|
By GERRY STEELE Baker City Herald Baker’s softball bats continue to need thawing. The Bulldogs offensive attack remained quiet Friday and Saturday at the annual ISG tournament in Boise. Baker lost four games at the tournament — 4-3 to Capital of Boise, 7-5 by international tie-breaker to Vallivue, 7-4 to Rocky Mountain and 3-0 to Mountain Home. “Overall I was pleased with our play,” said Baker coach Al McCauley. “There wasn’t a game where we couldn’t have won. “Our pitchers threw well enough to win every game. We just need to generate some offense. Our goal is to improve our bats before we get into league play.”
Baker led 2-0 in the third inning against Capital. An RBI single by Ashley Vela, and RBI groundout by Andrea Wilson gave Baker its lead. Capital then answered with four runs to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Baker got within a run when Vela singled home Becca Joseph with two outs. But the Bulldogs could get no closer. Vela and Savannah Daly each had two hits for Baker. Darryn McCauley took the loss in the circle in relief of Mackenzie Srack.
Vallivue scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning using the international tie-breaker. With the tie-breaker a team starts the inning with a runner on second base then plays the inning the same as regulation play. The Vikings had two runners on when a single plated both runs. Baker went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth. Trailing 1-0 in the second, Tori Brown’s sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1. Then trailing 5-2, Baker scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 5-5. Tara Talbott’s two-run triple and an RBI hit by McCauley knotted the game. McCauley and Brown each had two hits for the Bulldogs. Srack took the loss in relief of Brown.
Run-scoring hits by McCauley and Joseph tied the game at 2-2 after four innings. Rocky Mountain then used a 5-run fifth inning to break the game open. Joseph and Talbott added sacrifice flies to drive home Baker’s other runs. Daly and Talbott each had two hits. McCauley was the losing pitcher.
Baker managed just five hits in the game. Mountain Home scored all its runs in the third inning. Brown took the loss for Baker, striking out six.
Baker (1-5) travels to John Day Tuesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Grant Union.
