Baker softball sweeps Ontario, places second

Bulldogs host Sisters in Class 4A state playoffs May 25

Baker closed out its Greater Oregon League softball regular season by sweeping Ontario 6-5 and 12-3 Saturday at the Baker Sports Complex.

The sweep leaves the Bulldogs securely in second place in the GOL standings, and means Baker (16-6) will host Sisters May 25 in the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

Sisters is the Sky-Em second-place team. The Outlaws lost 10-2 to Marist Saturday in that league’s playoffs.

Baker won Game 1 Saturday with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Tori Brown opened the inning with a single. Then, after two outs, Morgan Johnson hit the first pitch she saw to left field. Brown raced home and slid in under the tag for the win.

Ontario took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on Alli Yano’s grand slam home run.

Baker got two runs back in the bottom of the inning on Brown’s two-run, bases-loaded single.

An Ontario error moved Baker closer at 4-3 in the third inning.

Then, after Ontario went up 5-3, Baker tied the game with two runs in the sixth.

Sierra Howerton drove home the first run with a double. Howerton then scored on a single by Laura Wilson.

DJ McCauley got the win, pitching the seventh in relief of Brown.

Baker used two big innings to claim the second game.

Howerton’s three-run double, and RBI hits by Wilson and Becca Joseph sparked a 5-run second.

Run-scoring doubles by Aubree Shepherd and Jessi Stephens, two passed balls and two steals of home, highlighted a 7-run sixth.

McCauley threw the complete game for the win.
