Baker spikers fall at La Grande

LA GRANDE — La Grande all but ended Baker’s hopes of a Greater Oregon League volleyball championship Thursday after handing the Bulldogs a 25-20, 27-25, 25-18 loss at La Grande.

The win gives La Grande a 6-1 GOL record, and drops Baker to 5-2. La Grande defeated Baker two of three league matches and holds the tie-breaker. For Baker to win the GOL crown, the Bulldogs will have to win their final two matches and hope La Grande loses their final two. Both teams play Ontario and Mac-Hi in their final regular-season matches.

Thursday, Baker jumped to a 10-6 lead in Game 1 only to have La Grande go on a 6-1 rally and never look back.

Game 2 went back and forth with the lead changing hands a half-dozen times. Baker built a 24-21 advantage, but La Grande again went on a 6-1 surge to gain the win.

In Game 3, La Grande forged a 15-7 cushion only to have Baker battle back to within 17-16. This time La Grande answered with an 8-2 run to close out the match.

Baker hosts Ontario at 4 p.m. Tuesday, then travels to Mac-Hi for a noon match Saturday. There will be no freshman match at Mac-Hi.
