Baker stays unbeaten

The Baker High School girls soccer team remained undefeated Thursday, turning back La Grande 2-1 at the Baker Sports Complex. Freshman left forward Maggie Harlow scored both goals for the Bulldogs, who now sport a 6-0-1 record. “She was right where she needed to be,” said her coach, DeeDee Clarke. Dallas Defrees got the assist on the first goal, and Kallie Baxter “crossed one beautifully” to Harlow for the second goal, Clarke said. The Tigers got a goal back on a free kick that bounced off the post and into the net. Baker goalkeeper Kristen Hoopes had no chance to make the stop, Clarke said. Robbie Langrell scored an apparent third goal for the Bulldogs, but the host squad was called offside on the play, negating the score. Langrell later left the game with a bloody nose. “Boy, did she play a tough game,” her coach said. On one play in the second half, she was knocked down and sprang up quickly —‑twice. The Bulldogs sent 32 shots at the La Grande keeper but managed just the two scores. La Grande had 11 shots at Hoopes, who “saved our bacon” on a play in the second half, Clarke said, jumping high for a ball well over her head and coming down with it. Clarke credited the play of Defrees, the center midfielder, who had 8 shots on goal, right defender Ashley Shively, right midfielder Baxter and Langrell, the right forward. Baker is off this weekend, but that doesn’t mean the players won’t be practicing hard. The Bulldogs have road games Thursday against Ontario and Friday against Riverside. |
