Baker sweeps Bishop Kelly

Baker mixed solid pitching, defense and hot bats Saturday to sweep Bishop Kelly 10-6, 13-2 in a non-league baseball doubleheader at Boise.

“We still have things to work on, but the kids were just happy to get out on a field and play some baseball,” said Baker coach Dan Blankenship.

“It was nice to get a couple of games under our belts against a pretty good team.”

Baker led from start to finish in the opener.

The Bulldogs scored three times in the top of the first inning. Coleman Lay’s two-run single, and an RBI hit by Trace Richardson did the damage.

Dekker Smith’s two-run single boosted Baker’s lead to 5-3 after three innings.

Richardson and Smith each added an RBI in the fourth. Richardson’s came on a triple, and Smith’s on a ground out.

Lay added another RBI hit to close out the scoring.

Ty Everson  threw the first five innings to gain the victory. Everson struck out four Knights. Derek Blankenship threw the final two innings, striking out two.

“Ty threw fairly well for us,” Coach Blankenship said.

“And, our outfield played well for us all day.”

Everson, Richardson and Lay each finished the first game with two hits. Lay and Smith drove in three runs each, and Richardson two.

The second game was more of the same.

Richardson’s two-run triple sparked a 3-run first inning.

Then, leading 3-2, the Bulldogs tallied six times in the fifth.

Smith had a two-run double, Jesse Brown a two-run single, Lay an RBI single, and Stephen Talbot a sacrifice fly.

Baker ended the game in the sixth with four more runs. Will Barr had a two-run double, and Richardson an RBI single.

Barr pitched the first four innings for the win. Justin Durflinger threw the final two innings.

Baker ended the game in the bottom of the inning by turning a second-to-short-to-first double play.

“The pitcher’s best friend. Nice way to end the game,” Blankenship said.

“Our pitchers threw pretty well,” he said. “Pretty much everybody had a hit or made some plays. It was nice to get a couple of wins.”

Everson had three hits, Richardson two hits and three RBIs. Smith, Brown and Barr each added two RBIs.

Baker (2-0) hosts Gladstone in a doubleheader Tuesday starting at 11 a.m. at the Baker Sports Complex.
