Baker won all but one match Saturday at the Burns Invitational volleyball tournament. It just so happened that that one loss came to Burns in the championship match. The Hilanders handed Baker a 20-25, 25-18, 15-10 defeat to claim the title. In pool play, Baker defeated Vale 25-22, 25-23, Nyssa 25-12, 25-20, and Madras 25-14, 25-19. In bracket play, the Bulldogs defeated Ontario 25-11, 24-26, 15-8, and Crane 25-21, 22-25, 15-8 to reach the title match. “The girls played well as a team,” said Baker coach Michele McCauley. “Our passing and digging numbers were up. That really helped us out throughout the day. Our defensive game was really strong.” Emily Smith was 98 percent digging and was 4-of-44 sering with two ace serves. Becca Joseph dug at 81 percent. Tiffany Burke had 15 kills and 14 blocks, Kylie Kitzmiller 22 kills and 96 percent serving, Tori Brown 14 kills, Annie Martin and Aly Ogan each nine kills, Darryn McCauley 11 ace serves and 91-percent serving, Whitney Phillips 22 blocks, 18 kills and 27 assists, and Kelsie Cole 28 assists. Baker will open its home season Tuesday by hosting the same Hilanders. The frosh and JV matches are scheduled at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity match at approximately 5:30 p.m. |
