Baker tennis sends 5 to state

A quintet of Baker tennis players qualified for the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state tournament during the Special District 5 tournament at Vale.

Courtney Petry joins Dan Sizer, Jordan Curtis, Trenton Howard and Nathan Eiselein at state.

Petry, a senior, is the lone Baker girl to advance.

Petry won her first three district matches in straight sets before coming up against her nemesis, Sarah Bond of Ontario, in the championship match.

Bond defeated Petry in two sets to win the district title.

Sizer, seeded No. 2 in the boys tournament, advanced despite battling mono.

“Dan had mono three weeks ago, and has done nothing for two weeks,” said Baker boys coach George Keister. “He was weak and rusty, but he wanted to play real bad.”

Sizer had an easy day Thursday in the first round action, drawing a bye then winning 6-0, 6-0.

“Even with the easy day Dan was suffering Friday,” Keister said.

Sizer then was taken to three sets before winning his semifinal match. He then lost the title match in straight sets to Vale’s Paul Spivey.

“It was an heroic performance,” Keister said.

Curtis, seeded fifth, won his first two matches in straight sets before losing to Spivey in the semis. He then fell in two sets in the third-fourth-place match to finish fourth.

“Jordan had a really good record all year,” Keister said. “It’s really hard to get a second player seeded, but we did.”

Curtis was 4-0 against district foes, and 8-3 overall entering the tournament.

Howard and Eiselein, seeded third, split their first two matches before winning the third-place match in two sets.

Ivan Hansen of Baker was the boys consolation champion.

The Baker boys finished second and the girls third in the team standings.

The state tournament runs Thursday through Saturday at the University of Oregon in Eugene.
