Baker tennis teams fall at Ontario

Ontario defeated Baker’s boys and girls tennis teams under cold, windy conditions Tuesday at Ontario. Ontario won the boys match 3-2, and the girls 4-1.

“It was a nasty day,” said Baker coach George Keister. “The weather channel said the winds were blowing 25 miles an hour, and they were blowing every bit of that.

“It was raining when we got to Ontario and we weren’t sure we were going to play,” Keister said. “Then it stopped raining and the wind dried off the courts.”

Keister said it is a challenge to play in the wind.

“Playing in the wind takes away your normal stuff,” he said. “But it was a good experience for the kids.”

Dan Sizer and Gus Hansen, Baker’s No. 2 and 3 singles, earned the Bulldogs boys wins.

“Gus is doing really well,” Keister said. “He’s playing singles this year after playing doubles last year. Gus is 6-foot-5 and left-handed. That puts a different spin on his shots and some of his opponents are having a devil of a time returning his shots.”

Courtney Petry picked up Baker’s only girls win in straight sets in the No. 1 singles match.

“Courtney did a really good job,” Keister said. “Her opponent was like a wall, returning everything she hit. But Courtney really hung in there.”

Baker returns to the Treasure Valley Friday when they travel to Nyssa.
