Several newcomers mix with solid veteran base

Baker High School track and field coach Suzy Cole better be good with jigsaw puzzles. She has a big one to put together with this year’s Baker track team.

“So far we’ve had 60 kids out,” Cole said. “That’s a little lower than we’d like to see. On the positive side we have a lot of new people out.

“As far as what to expect I don’t have a clue,” Cole said. “Having so many new athletes out we want to focus on fundamentals, enjoy practices and meets.

“Our philosophy is if you enjoy what you do you’ll have more success at it.

“No one event will stand out. We have some good kids in each event,” Cole said.

Six members of last year’s Greater Oregon League district champion girls team return from the Class 4A state meet.

Haley Adams and Whitney Phillips went to state in the pole vault. Phillips also qualified in the 400 and 4x400 relay.

Melissa Clarke advanced in the 3,000, Kelsie Cole in the 4x400 relay, Hannah Prince in the 4x100 relay, and Dakota Olson in both relays.

Other returning Bulldogs are distance runner Brandon Lowry after a year off; Jake Eastland in the javelin and jumps; Taylor Thamert in the sprints and middle distances; Skyler Young in the 400 and 800; Kylie Curtis in the throwing events; Kori Rayborn in the distances; and Felicia Schneider in the jumps.

“Jake Sandefur also is back in the jumps and middle distances. He was injured early last year and didn’t compete,” Cole said.

“We also have four or five first-year senior boys who could help in the field events.”

Cole said Hayden Perkins also returns in the hurdles. He competed two years ago, but not last year.

Senior Walker Kaseberg is out for the first time and will be looked at in the jumps and 400.

“Nothing really matters until district anyway,” Cole said. “During the season we’ll try to focus on individual strengths and fundamentals.”

The Bulldogs opened their season today at the Pendleton Invitational.
