Baker trio heads to quarters

PORTLAND — Three Baker wrestlers have reached the quarterfinals at the Class 4A state tournament at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Drew Stanley (145 pounds), Anthony Constantine (152) and Jake Shukle (215) each advanced after Thursday’s first day of action.

Stanley earned a 5-1 decision over Tanner Sustari of Cottage Grove in his first match. He will face No. 1 seed Cody Randall of North Marion in the quarterfinals.

Constantine decisioned fifth-seed Harmon Heater of Henley 6-3 in his opener. Constantine will meet fourth-seed Tucker Cook of Tillamook in the quarters.

Shukle, the fifth seed, took a 12-3 decision over Taft’s Chris Padilla in his first match. Shukle meets Sonny Tapua of Siuslaw in the quarters.

Two other Bulldogs remain alive in consolation action.

Sam Pearson (145) lost by pin to second-seed Blythe Stair of Stayton in his first match. Pearson then pinned Chase Joyce-Duncan of Cottage Grove. Pearson will wrestle Brian Willis of Yamhill-Carlton in consolation action.

Fifth-seed Andrew Porter (130) pinned Elmira’s Robbie Hodges in his opener. Porter then dropped a 15-2 decision to Jordan Smith of Scappoose. Porter will face Tanner Tyler of Pleasant Hill in consolation action.

Three other Bulldogs are finished.

Josh Valentine (103) was pinned by top-seed Steven Pinto of Estacada. Valentine then earned a 2-0 decision over Branden Holteen of Brookings-Harbor before losing by pin to Paulo Valez of Tillamook.

Zach Valentine (112) took an 8-7 decision over Erick Nazario of LaPine in his first match. Valentine then was pinned by sixth seed Tyler Holly of Sweet Home before rebounding for a 9-1 decision over Jason Graber of Siuslaw. Valentine then was eliminated, losing by fall to Steven Middaugh of Yamhill-Carlton.

Miguel Kitch (125) lost 15-8 to Jesse Sinclair of Junction City in his first match. Kitch then was pinned by Cade Hartley of Ontario.

Action continues through Saturday.
