Baker trio plays well at 4A series

ROSEBURG — A trio of Baker players helped the South win 2 of 3 games June 13-14 at the annual Sterling Savings Bank 4A High School Baseball Series at Legion Field in Roseburg. BHS graduates Cole Brown, Jordan Harlow and Grant Marcum helped the South win 11-9 and 8-5 on Sunday. The North won Saturday 12-8. “Jordan played shortstop, and played well defensively,” said Baker coach Dan Blankenship. “And, he got a couple of hits. “Grant caught two games and pitched an inning in one game,” Blankenship said. “He threw out a couple of runners and got a couple of hits. “Cole played the outfield, second base and pitched. He was the most valuable player for the South. “All three guys played really well,” Blankenship said. In Sunday’s second game, Brown was the winning pitcher, striking out six in four innings. He also was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Marcum will play collegiate ball for Fortune River Community College next spring, and Harlow for Chemeketa CC.

Bulldogs quintet named to state PORTLAND — Five members of the Class 4A state runnerup Baker Bulldogs were recently named to the 4A all-state baseball teams. Junior Derek Blankenship and senior Jordan Harlow were named as first-team infielders. Senior pitcher Cole Brown, senior catcher Grant Marcum, and junior utility player Dekker Smith were named to the all-state third team.
PORTLAND — Baker graduate Tara Talbott was recently named to the Class 4A all-state softball second team as an infielder. Talbott, who has signed a letter of intent to play softball next spring at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, helped the Bulldogs place second in the Greater Oregon League and earn a state playoff berth. Talbott was named GOL player of the year.
PV Dixons garner state honors NORTH POWDER — Class 1A state boys basketball champion Powder Valley was well represented recently when the 1A all-state teams were finally released. Sophomore Trenton Dixon was named Class 1A player of the year and was named to the first team all-state team. His coach, Kyle Dixon, was named Class 1A coach of the year.
MIDLAND, Texas — Right-hander Jared Lansford, a former Baker baseball player, is pitching for the Midland Rockhounds in the Class AA Texas League. In seven games, Lansford is 0-1 with a 3.38 earned-run average. Lansford began the year with the Sacramento Mudcats in the Pacific Coast League, but was demoted after having control troubles on the mound.
BOISE — Josh Lansford, a former Baker baseball player, opened his 2009 professional baseball season with the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League Saturday. Lansford, a right-handed pitcher converted from an infielder, last played in Boise his rookie season of 2006.
WILSONVILLE — Five Baker City-area high schools are ranked in their respective classifications in the final OSAA Oregonian Cup standings for the 2008-09 school year. Baker is ranked 19th in the Class 4A with 2,135 points. Pine-Eagle (1,345) is 12th, Powder Valley (845) 33rd, Huntington (620) 57th, and Burnt River (600) 65th in Class 1A.
MERIDIAN, Idaho — Bob Erskine of Baker City is ranked 35th in the Performance Solutions Pro Class at Firebird Raceway.
The victory evened the overall series at 10 wins each. Powder Valley’s Joey Brown played on the East squad.
Two Baker City women ran in the Eighth Annual FootZone Dirty Half Marathon June 14 at Bend. Rebeca Piedra placed 673rd with a time of 3:11.58. Cindy Herring placed 674th with a 3:12.38 clocking. The 13.1-mile singletrack run was held on Phil’s Trail west of Bend. nearly 700 runners and walkers competed.
Jackie Owens, a former Baker rodeo rider, finished 31st in the women’s breakaway roping competition at the National Collegiate Finals Rodeo Saturday at Casper, Wyo. Owens, who now rides for the University of Idaho, had no scores in her first two rides at the national rodeo. She then scored a 2.7 in her final ride.
The Pine-Eagle School Board recently approved the coaching contracts for Spartan coaches for the 2009-10 school year. Blake Dennis was rehired for football and wrestling; Cindy Plano for volleyball; Roger Gulick, girls basketball; Jeremiah Sprague, boys basketball; and Joe Sciarrino, softball. The volunteer position for baseball remains open.
The North defeated the South 32-14 Saturday in the annual Les Schwab Bowl football all-star game at Hillsboro Stadium. Quarterback Jack Lomax had a hand in five North scoring drives, and receiver Mitch Singler caught seven passes for 114 yards. Both players will play at Oregon State University in the fall.

The Boise Burn clinched its first af2 arena football playoff berth Saturday with a 57-54 victory over Stockton in Boise. The Burn notched its first six-game winning streak with the win.
The Tri-City Fever lost the fifth af2 football game in a row Saturday, 69-22 at Spokane. The Fever (1-11) has lost five in a row overall and seven in a row to the rival Shock (11-0). The Shock scored on its first seven possessions. |
