Baker wrestlers host eight teams at tournament

Baker won three of four dual matches at the first Bulldog Invitational dual wrestling tournament to place third in the eight-team event at BHS Saturday.

The Bulldogs defeated Joseph 61-18 to open action Saturday morning. Parma, Idaho, handed Baker its only loss, 54-19, in the semifinals. Baker then bounced back to defeat Wallowa 52-16 in the consolation semis, and Riverside 51-24 in the third-place match.

Union topped Parma 57-24 to win the tournament championship.

"It was a good dual tournament and we plan to do it again next year," said Baker coach Dee Gorrell.

"Overall, I was proud of the kids the way they stepped it up. We had a little downfall against Parma, but the kids came back to win their next two matches.

Jesse Christensen finished the day 4-0 at 125 pounds, as did Seth Klassen at 160. Finishing 3-1 for Baker were Jon Henry (189), Quincy Warner (130), Mike Voss (152), Micah Johnson (135) and Trent Tomasini (112).

Baker thumps Joseph

Tomasini, Warner, Johnson, Voss, Klassen and Henry all defeated their Eagles opponent by pin.

Christensen won 13-4, and Josh Bryant (140) 16-11.

Grant Marcum (119), Jake Voss (145) and Hartman won by forfeit.

Parma rolls

Klassen and Hartman earned victories by pin for Baker.

Christensen won 12-3, and Henry 6-5. In Henry's match, the Baker grappler built a 6-2 lead after two rounds, then held off a late rally.

Treeing the Cougars

Against Wallowa, Baker wrestlers Marcum, Warner and Mike Voss each won by pin.

Johnson claimed an 18-5 decision. Tomasini, Christensen, Bryant, Jake Voss and Klassen all won by forfeit.

Third-place trophy

Baker squared off against Greater Oregon League rival Riverside in the third-place match.

Christensen, Warner, Mike Voss and Klassen all won by pin.

Henry scored three points in the final round to break a 1-1 tie and earn a 4-1 decision.

Tomasini, Marcum, Johnson and Jake Voss all won by forfeit.

Concessions for the tournament were handled by parents from the Baker High School wrestling team.

Baker travels to the Best of the West dual tournament Wednesday and Thursday at Tri-Cities, Wash.
